Story 71

American Singles

Hi, my name is Susan. I "met" my husband online. In May of 1998, I had just broken up with my boyfriend (whom I caught in bed with another woman) and had recently moved to south Texas to live with my parents. I didn't know anybody in the area, so I decided to go to American Singles and place an ad to meet people. I described myself as weird and sarcastic. About a week later, I received a response from Isaac, my husband. He e-mailed me at about 4 o'clock in the morning with just a simple two-line e-mail, "hi, I'm weird and sarcastic also, etc". We e-mailed back and forth, I visited his web page, and after about a week of e-mailing and chatting via ICQ, we decided to meet.

Now, since I'm not crazy, I decided to bring my older brother along with me, just to make sure Isaac wasn't some sort of psychotic killer. On a Saturday afternoon, my brother and I drove to Isaac's apartment and hung out with him. We actually stayed there for about 6 hours just hanging out and goofing off on the computer. Isaac and I seemed to hit it off. What I especially remember is going out to his balcony and laying on the rug, and he came and sat next to me and played with my hair.

I came back to town the next day to see Isaac again. We went and saw Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and hung out afterwards. After the first couple of dates, we were inseparable. I moved in with Isaac in August of 1998. In June of 1999, Isaac proposed to me. We had recently moved to a bigger apartment in April, and he proposed to me out on the balcony. Isaac and I were married on April 2nd of 2000. I am so happy and grateful that I was able to meet him, and I am especially grateful that I filled out that American Singles ad so that I could meet him.

I think that if people do intend on placing ads and meeting people online, if you do go to see the person "real life", that you should bring a friend or relative along. You might also choose to meet in a public place. It is always best to play it safe, regardless of how great you think the person is online or how much you think you know them.

Bye,
Susan
